KANPUR CITY is all set for a major overhaul provided the development authorities, implement the approved master plan religiously. Special emphasis had been laid on developing the infrastructure in the city as the new Master Plan has increased percentage of land from 8 per cent to 15.3 per cent, for the use of transport (roads, dividers, footpaths and fly overs etc).

Secretary Kanpur Development Authority Bhupendra Singh said, “The Master Plan 2021 has been prepared for the population of 51 lakhs, which includes 45 lakhs in urban area and 6 lakhs in rural area. Total area covered under the master plan is 900 square kilometers against 300 square kilometers till date.”
“We have taken care of transport, which is the biggest problem today in the city, as the population is increasing while the roads are shrinking due to encroachments and other local problems. We have decided to use 15.3 per cent of land for the purpose of roads so that the traffic in the extended city should not become a problem,” added Singh.
Proposal for a new airport to boost the city air traffic on Pipergaon-Kasigawan, a huge ring road, connecting 44 major roads of the city has also been mooted. The best thing in the plan is that no permission has been given for skyscrapers in the selected areas like Swarup Nagar besides other residential areas.
The master plan has also proposed a new inter-State bus terminus (ISBT) at Ragahi Bangar and regional bust stations at various corners of the city.

Green belt including parks and other means of protecting environments had been given 20.87 per cent of the area.
However, the authorities seemed to have forgotten vendor’s zone for the street vendors. The city is battling with the problem of encroachments. One of prime reasons for it includes vendors. As per a rough estimate there were more than 30,000 vendors in the city.
