Maths is fun in textbooks

Authors of NCERT books have taken a leaf out of 'street mathematics' to make learning easy for kids.

Ever wondered how the local tea stall boy, who has probably never attended school, adds up the change faster than you?

The authors of NCERT textbooks have taken a leaf out of 'street mathematics' to make learning enjoyable for the kids. According to Anita Rampal, who has been associated with the writing of NCERT maths textbooks, the attempt is to prevent learning by rote.

“Mathematic is not just about numbers, but also about spatial relationships and shapes. The books teach kids these concepts in a fun way,” says Rampal. For the first time, science and commerce stream students have a common textbook.
The number of chapters has also been cut to 16 from 19 and 21 for Science and Commerce stream students, respectively.
