A number of inaugurations, project openings and a function were organised to mark the occasion. Mayawati announced 36 new projects and 12 government decisions. One of the major announcements was that the medium of education in parishad schools would now be English, right from Class I. “This is important because our children face problems in competitive exams because of their poor base in the English language,” said Mayawati.

She inaugurated the Rs 67-crore, eight-lane Mahamaya flyover over Noida-Greater Noida Expressway and Okhla Barrage, Noida road. She added a touch of humour saying, “No, Mahamaya has nothing to do with my name. The project has been named after Lord Buddha’s mother.”

The CM also laid the foundation stones of 29 projects, six of which she dedicated to the public. The total worth of projects that were inaugurated and started was quoted as Rs 8,500 crore.

She used the platform to launch yet another attack on the Centre. She pointed out the UPA had ignored her plea for a Rs 80,000-crore package for Bundelkhand and other parts of Uttar Pradesh.

Mayawati blamed the Samajwadi Party for the backwardness of drought-hit Bundelkhand, and its grim legacy in the power, agriculture and development sectors.
