Maya offers Rs 500 to Dalit widow

The Mayawati government in Uttar Pradesh swung into action today sending one of its officers with Rs 500 to help her.

A day after British Foreign Secreatry David Miliband and AICC General Secreary Rahul Gandhi spent a night at a Dalit widow's house at Semra village, the Mayawati government in Uttar Pradesh swung into action today sending one of its officers with Rs 500 to help her.

On directives of the government, Block Development Officer (BDO) Mahendra Kumar Choubey reached the village and gave Rs 500 to the Dalit widow Shivkumari (30).

"I am here on directions of the government to know about the lady and provide her necessary help and benefits of government schemes", Chowbey said.

The officer also completed formalities to give work (of maid) to the lady under NREGS and assured her widow pension to which she is entitled.

Asked about her family, Shivkumari told PTI that her husband was a tractor driver who
died and she was left with the responsibility of looking after her five children.

The lady, who hosted the two young leaders on January 14 nights in her thatched house worked in self-help group under Rajiv Gandhi Women development scheme. (MORE)

"I am hopeful that Rahul bhaiya will fulfill his promise. After his visit, I am getting tremendous attention and I hope that my life will see a positive change in the days to come", Shivkumari said.

Among her five children Renu (11), Sunny (9) and Shiva (7) goes to primary school while Nandini (5) and Sunil (3) stays at home.

Village Pradhan Lallan Tiwari said he would extend all possible help to the lady and her family and ensure she gets benefits of government schemes.
