BSP supremo Mayawati’s bold step to expel tainted MPs from her party is almost like a trend-setter in Indian politics (Cleansing cream, December 28). MPs trapped in the earlier infamous JMM bribery case later became heavyweights to dominate political scenes. The BJP should also expel its guilty MPs from the party. Its leaders are living in a dreamland by anticipating cancellation of the expulsion of tainted MPs by the courts.

Whatever be the motives behind Mayawati’s prompt action in expelling the tainted BSP MPs from her party, her initiative deserves applause. The example set by her should be followed by other parties if we really want to rid our polity of corrupt politicians.
This is the first step and the second for all parties should be to deny tickets to those with a criminal past to fight any election.

Terrorists after attacking the country’s infrastructure and creating disaffection among people, are now targeting the intellectual capital. The attack on IISc shows their nefarious designs. The government and people have to be vigilant. The criticism that there was security lapse despite previous warning of militant attack carries credibility in the light of the government’s record of timely action.

While India cannot be indifferent to the developments in the island country, it must also be aware of the misperceptions that may arise due to India’s participation in the peace process. Any misstep could spell a foreign policy disaster.
