Two major residents' groups such as Joint Action Forum of RWAs (Jafra) and Gurgaon Citizen Council (GCC) have opposed the move of the Congress, which had neither fielded its candidates nor had let the independents to use party symbol in MCG election, for cornering councillors.

“The number of councillors, who have nothing to do with the Congress party or its ideology, seem to have been carried away with glib promises made to them by Congress leaders. Some of them had even criticised the Haryana government during campaigns,” said RS Rathee, the president of GCC.

Rathee said that the mayor so elected by these councillors would be the “Yes Man” of the Congress and the Haryana government.

“The Haryana CM has no right to invite the independent councillors and meet them ahead of the mayor election. It is a way of create pressure on them to support the Congress party,” said Col (retd.) Ratan Singh, Jafra chairman.
