While the Capital is jostling for space to accommodate the ever-increasing number of cars, the parking space is all set to shrink. According to the MCD, out of the 254 surface parking lots submitted to the traffic police, objections have been raised on nearly 89 of them.

The MCD says the traffic police have stated that these parking lots on the main road obstruct traffic. With traffic jams becoming a regular feature on Delhi roads, the traffic police are trying to restrict the number of parking lots in many
areas. The number may be reduced from 254 to 165.

“We had submitted a list of 254 parking lots to the traffic police and they have conveyed that they don’t find nearly 89 parking lots feasible as they obstruct traffic. The traffic police have not given us a list of such parking lots yet and it will be submitting it in a week’s time,” said a senior MCD official. The MCD had submitted 254 parking lots for approval, while the NDMC has 78 parking lots and DDA has 65 of them.

The Bhure Lal Committee which would be taking a final decision on the whole issue has said that once it gets a list from MCD, NDMC and DDA, it will bring out the final list.
