A day after the Supreme Court said a modernised abattoir would come up at Ghazipur and no change of site would be allowed, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) has decided to launch a major campaign to build public opinion in favour of the slaughterhouse.

The corporation has prepared a CD containing a detailed presentation of how the modernised slaughterhouse would look and function.

"We will invite East Delhi residents who have joined hands under the banner of Butcherkhana Virodhi Manch. The CD will allay all their fears. Presentations will also be made to MLAs and councillors in the MCD's Standing Committee," said MCD Commissioner Rakesh Mehta.

Changing the opinion of politicians is an important task for the MCD because they have mass appeal. A major advertisement campaign is in the pipeline, which will be aired on Doordarshan and Siti Cable.

The campaign will focus on the goodness of a good slaughterhouse. "We will educate the people about the unhygienic conditions in which meat is being slaughtered at the Idgah abattoir and the illegal slaughtering that goes around in the area," the officer said.
