About 50 shopkeepers at Vyapar Kendra on Friday locked all three gates to the premises and didn't allow MCG vehicles to dump garbage on a vacant plot.
They agreed to unlock the gates only after Gurgaon mayor Vimal Yadav, senior deputy mayor Yashpal Batra and deputy mayor Parminder Kataria intervened.
A vacant area at the complex, located along the Mehrauli road in Sector 14, was being used by the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) to collect and sort garbage. "The MCG has not bothered to auction the shops, but it has been misusing the plots as a dump yard. It is wrong and illegal," said a shopkeeper.
The garbage leads to a foul smell and is a big health hazard, he added.
The MCG had to develop Vyapar Kendra as a big shopping centre years ago. A tender was floated twice in the past 20 years but only 50 shops have been auctioned.
"We have assured them that we would soon identify an alternative to collect and sort garbage," said Yashpal Batra, senior deputy mayor.
The shopkeepers' grievance is genuine, he added.
