THE MUSLIM Education and Career Promotion Society (MECAPS) has taken two major steps this academic session to make its scholarship programme more effective. First, the scholarship for classes IX and X has been enhanced from Rs 200 per month to Rs 250 per month, and for classes XI and XII from Rs 250 to Rs 300.
Secondly, it has rendered financial assistance amounting to Rs one lakh to eight MECAPS scholarship recipients who have passed PMT and PET examinations and have joined medical and engineering courses. One student has been granted Rs 30,000 for admission in MBA. MECAPS secretary Mohammed Saghir Bedaar said in a statement that all these students belonged to extremely weaker sections of society. One student is a labourer’s son, two are sons of Madarsa teachers, and one is a son of a driver.
MECAPS scholarships for weaker section are granted on ‘merit-cum-means’ basis. For the 2006-07 academic session, 40 students of classes IX and XI have been identified for grant of scholarships. Out of these eight are orphans, four are sons of mechanics, three of drivers, eighteen pf labourers and two of peons etc.
He said scholarships of 88 students have been renewed on the basis of their academic performance in 2005-06 session. In all, 128 scholarships have been sanctioned so far. In the last academic session, scholarships and financial aid amounting to Rs 4.93 lakh were granted to 216 students, he added.
