To protest attack on fellow students
JUNIOR DOCTORS at MY Hospital and students of MGM Medical College went on a flash strike on Monday to protest police inaction and demand arrest of the people who attacked two medical undergraduates injuring them seriously late on Sunday night.
Raghavendra Thakur, a third year MBBS student and the president of the Medical Students’ Association, Vivek Chouhan of first year, and two other students had gone to Gurukripa Hotel in Chhoti Gwaltoli area at around 1.30 am. After eating, they had a tussle with some unidentified persons over parking of vehicles and were attacked with knives. Raghavendra and Vivek were injured.
The two other students, and a few others who came rushing on learning of the brawl, first brought the two injured medicos to the MY Hospital and then lodged an FIR at the Chhoti Gwaltoli police station, police sources said.
The condition of Raghavendra is serious while that of Vivek is stable, but both of them are still in the ICU, doctors attending on them said.
Meanwhile, demanding the arrest of the culprits, the irate medicos and junior doctors went on a flash strike. Earlier, about 100-120 students, who bunked classes, and junior doctors gathered at the MY main gate and also pulled off the junior doctors on duty, thus paralysing the OPD working for quite sometime. They then took out a procession from the hospital to the Chhoti Gwaltoli police station. The agitators gheraoed the police station and shouted slogans against the police inaction.

{{/usCountry}}“When the incident happened Sunday night, there were no police personnel available. We demand quick action against the unidentified persons who attacked our colleagues,” Madhya Pradesh Junior Doctors Association president Dr Anand Rai said.
“After the gherao of the police station, we went to the SP Office and submitted a memorandum demanding early arrest of the culprits to Additional SP Manoj Shrivastava,” he added.
The strike was, however, withdrawn first with resumption of emergency ward routine late in the afternoon and then the MPJDA deciding to work with black ribbons from Tuesday as a mark of protest.
At the MY, the administration held a meeting of all the heads of departments to discuss the situation arising out of the strike. “I have asked all the heads of departments to make alternative arrangements in view of the strike. Assistant Professors and Assistant Surgeons were deputed to handle the respective departments,” MY Superintendent Dr D K Jain said.
Till the time normalcy resumed, confusion prevailed as many patients, including expectant mothers, were turned back without proper information. Things, however, improved a little by the evening.
