INTENSIFYING THEIR anti-reservation protest, medicos of the Banaras Hindu University (BHU) have decided to go on a 48-hour relay hunger strike from Wednesday.

The undergraduate and postgraduate students of Institute of Medical Sciences (IMS-BHU) whose 24 hour relay hunger strike entered its fourth-day here on Tuesday, would now go on a 48 hour relay hunger strike from Wednesday.

As many as six medicos of IMS-BHU including Dr. Anurag Gupta, Dr. Manjari Dixit, Dr. Dinesh Singh, Dr. Saurabh Srivastava, Dr. Khushboo Singh and Dr. Sushma Shanker under the banner of Resident Doctor’s Association (RDA) sat on the 24 hour relay hunger strike on IMS premises here today.

“We are left with no option but to intensify our agitation and get the government realised that the proposal to enhance reservation for OBCs in premier educational institutes would only hit the existing academic standard hard”, said the RDA members.

The students launched a campaign in the hostels and residences of BHU to garner support of hospital staff, nursing staff and members of other faculties for the massive rally on Thursday.

Gorakhpur
JUNIOR DOCTORS at BRD Medical College in Gorkahpur have geared up to join the anti-reservation movement in support of the medicos’ strike. They convened a meeting on Tuesday and discussed a strategy for launching the movement.

Though the date for agitation has not been announced, sources said junior doctors would take to the streets after completion of the Medical Council of India inspection . Dr Pankaj, Dr Rahul Srivastav, Dr Anoop Gupta and others criticised the Union Government. Dr Rahul said a mass contact programme would be launched.

Meanwhile, an SMS to doctors from various parts of the country is creating confusion.

The message says Dr Subhash Srivastav who was on hunger strike against the reservation proposal collapsed on May 20 at 6.44 pm and the media ignored the news. The Junior Doctors’ Association said the SMS was false.
