Services of 92 doctors of Indira Gandhi Medical College (IGMC) in Nagpur have been terminated for going on strike to protest against the reduction in post-graduate seats in Maharashtra where an indefinite stir by resident doctors and students entered the fourth day on Friday.
"The IGMC Dean has sacked the 92 doctors and asked them to vacate their hostels immediately," college sources said. "Medical services in government and municipal hospitals have been affected by the strike and Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai has deployed 100 doctors from the Health Directorate to meet the shortfall, hospital sources said," adding only emergency operations will be carried out.
"Students and resident doctors are, meanwhile, meeting various top officials and politicians explaining their position," student representative Akshay Bafna said, adding they will be taking up their grievances with MP Priya Dutt.
"Although Maharashtra Minister for Higher Education Dilip Valse-Patil was in New Delhi to work out a solution on the issue with Medical Council of India and Directorate of Higher Education, so far nothing has come out of the Higher Education Ministry or from the Minister for Medical Education Suresh Shetty," the students association said.
