Meet discusses human trafficking through Indo-Nepal border

This was part of the series of meetings held with the religious leaders from different faiths. Similar meetings were held for the representatives of Buddhist and Christian faiths under the aegis of the Cross Border Anti-Trafficking Network, Gorakhpur.

In the meeting, the religious heads expressed concern over the issue and called for effective steps to curb the menace. The organisations were represented by Dr Haroon Rashid, Nadwa, Maulana Zakir Noor, Arabic Department Lucknow University, Dr Shabbir, Head of the department of Arabic- Lucknow University.
As the vigil on the known routes across the Indo-Nepal border had been stepped up, human trafficking was taking place from 108 different routes along the porous border. Based on the observation, the convener of the CBATN IPN Singh on Monday said the traffickers had now been operating from the lesser-known terrains.

He said the CBATN along with the effort of government agencies had been able to curb trafficking on the main route viz; Badhani (Sidhartha Nagar), Rupaidiya (Bahraich), Tuthibari (Maharajganj), and Nautanwa (Maharajganj).

Despite this, trafficking of women and children was rising at an alarming rate. Lucknow and Banaras were the transit point for human traffickers, said Singh.
To tackle the problem, 76 representatives of NGOs, government agencies, donor agencies and media from SAARC nations held a meeting at Lucknow last month. Subsequently, they constituted a 15-member Regional Anti-Trafficking Task Force.
