With the Supreme Court's order on reservation for OBCs sparking off a judiciary-versus-legislature debate, the issue is likely to be discussed at a meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee of the Human Resources Ministry.
On Monday, the Supreme Court directed the government to place before it the report of the Parliamentary Standing Committee that is examining the bill providing for OBC quota in higher-education institutions.
Though the draft bill on 27 per cent reservation is not on the agenda of the Standing Committee meeting, a member said the committee might discuss it. Parliamentary committee reports can be scrutinised by courts, the member said.
This is the second standing committee meeting after the draft bill on reservation was referred to it in August. The bill has not been discussed so far.
On Tuesday, HRD Minister Arjun Singh met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Though there is no official word on what transpired between them, officials said Arjun Singh had gone with a delegation of freedom fighters. However, the ministry has decided not to comment on the court order till the Parliamentary committee submits its report.
The meeting takes place in the backdrop of several political parties criticising the apex court order, saying it was an encroachment on the rights of the legislature.
