Polling for 60-member Meghalaya Assembly began at 7 am today which will decide the political future of 333 aspirants.
There was a good turnout in the state capital, which was experiencing bright sunshine. People were seen forming queues much before polling booths opened.
Over 12 lakh voters are expected to cast their ballots in today's election.
BJP state unit president Dr W Kharshiing, who is contesting the polls, was the first voter to cast his vote in Laitumukhrah polling station.
In Tiloksing Nagar area, over 60 people had exercised thier franchise till 9 am, while in Laitumukhrah, Umpling and Mawkhar areas, 40 people had cast their vote before 8 am, polling officials told PTI.
A report from Garo Hills said people lined up in front of polling booths at Mahendra Ganj, Tikrikilla, Phulbari and Resubelpara since early morning.
There was no report of any untoward incident so far, official sources said.
