The work on memorial to those killed in fighting with the security forces during Operation Bluestar in 1984 began at the Golden Temple complex Sunday.

Leaders of the ruling Shiromani Akali Dal were not present when the kar sewa, or voluntary service, was launched. June 6 is the 28th anniversary of Bluestar — a military operation to flush militants out of the holiest Sikh shrine.

Terming the militants killed in the action as “martyrs” of Sikhism, the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee, responsible for the upkeep of gurdwaras, on May 3 gave the go-ahead to the memorial.
