Merit doesn’t count

With reference to Chaitanya Kalbag’s article India, the class act (June 14), it never ceases to surprise me that Mahatma Gandhi was in favour of the caste system.

With reference to Chaitanya Kalbag’s article India, the class act (June 14), it never ceases to surprise me that Mahatma Gandhi was in favour of the caste system. How can anything that divides mankind be good for it? During elections, the political leaders are quite blatant in asking for votes on the basis of caste, not merit. Even the media, which are supposed to educate the nation, routinely puts out information on vote-bank politics and how caste plays an important role in this.
