The purpose of these centres would be to further augment the skills of the nursing community, he said while declaring open a nursing college in centrally-administered Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Post-graduation Medical Education and Research in Pondicherry.

He also commissioned the MRI Scan unit, Multislice Spiral CT Scanner and Cardia Cath lab in Pondicherry.

In recognition of the contributions of nurses, a Florence Nightingale award would be presented every year by the President, he said.

Ramadoss said JIPMER would be raised to the level of All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, and added that within three years it would have all the facilities under one roof so that no patient would have to move out elsewhere to get treatment.
