The report Not guilty... (February 22) on the verdict delivered on the Jessica Lall murder case is truly depressing. There is no point blaming the police as they are known to be corrupt. It just shows that the rich and powerful can get away with murder and this does not augur well for the common man. The law has become a hand-maiden of the powerful. In a society robbed of its conscience, it is shameful that the courts didn’t find it fit to haul up the police’s farcical investigation.

It’s wrong that Manu Sharma has got away with a murder that he had clearly committed. Surely the eyewitnesses must have been bought. Is there no punishment for those who change their statements in court? The common man can predict whether the case against an influential man will hold or not. It does not require a legal expert.
Why then does the CBI or police waste time in pursuing these cases? It’s another nail in the coffin of justice. And the common citizen can only watch, horrified.

It is a blot on our judicial system where rich and influential people escape punishment by buying witnesses, investigators and hijacking the legal process. Lie-detecting machines should be used to check witnesses and accused persons.
The Supreme Court and the government should make this a test-case and re-open the case to do justice. It is the least the nation owes to Jessica’s family.

It has taken seven long years for the case to be brought to ‘injustice’. No one has been convicted for murder or for harbouring the accused. Criminals have conspired to bring the case to an end. This can happen only in India.

Killing birds
Lakhs of birds are being killed to quell the scare of bird flu. Precautions have been advised for the consumption of chicken and eggs. The birds suspected to be infected should be quarantined and nature allowed to take its own course. Safety kits are a must for workers handling the birds.
