Tinsukia district superintendent of police PK Bhuyan said that about 700 people were sitting with the bodies of the five killed at Longsali on Friday waiting to speak with the central team led by Union minister of state for Home Sriprakash Jaiswal.

Traffic on the national highway in Longsali was unaffected as it fell within Tinsukia subdivision where indefinite curfew was imposed since 5:00 pm last evening, he said.

Official sources said that no untoward incident was reported from the affected districts.

Thirty-six people, mostly migrants from Bihar, and seven poll personnel, were killed by ULFA and another insurgent group in Assam on Saturday, raising the death toll since Friday night to 56.

Curfew was imposed and a red alert sounded in Tinsukia sub-division following the attacks that set off a security alert in Assam, which asked the Centre to rush additional forces for next month's National Games in Guwahati.

The Assam government has decided to observe Monday as "Mourning Day" in memory of those killed by the ULFA and appealed the people, including its employees and students, to wear black badges.
