In just one week's time, militants struck for the second time on Srinagar's crucial national highway on Thursday and fired from heavy weaponry at a passing Border Security Forces (BSF) vehicle by laying an ambush early in the morning. One soldier was killed and another injured.
Around 70:30 am, a BSF vehicle came under fire from heavy weapons when it reached Methain area on the Srinagar-Baramulla highway on the outskirts. The attack left two BSF soldiers, Hem Singh and Krishen Kalita, from 8th Battalion, injured.
"Krishen Kalita succumbed to his injuries later in the base hospital. A case has been registered in this regard and investigation taken up," said a statement from Srinagar's zonal police headquarters.
Preliminary reports suggested the militants who had laid an ambush fled from the spot. Though the security forces immediately laid a cordon and started search operations in the area. No militant outfit has taken responsibility for the attack.
The attack has come just days after inspector general of police AG Mir claimed that the J&K police have busted the entire ring that recently carried out a suicide attack on a CRPF deployment on the same Srinagar-Baramulla highway near Bemina, which left five CRPF personnel dead. Mir said four people were arrested and two killed in connection with the attack bringing a closure to attack and the recent infiltration from Uri sector in north Kashmir.
The attack, however, has come as a reminder from the militants that its presence has increased in Srinagar city, which was declared as zero-militancy zone in the past two years. The worry for the police is that the two attacks have occurred on the national highway frequented by army convoys every day.
