Millenium City now leaps to hospitality

It seems National Highway 8 (also called Jaipur Highway) has a penchant for attracting luxury hotels, with at least 20 such hotels set to come up on this already 'luxury' stretch. Industry experts say customers will benefit because the cut-throat competition among hotels will push prices down.

The Oberoi's 202-room facility is the latest addition. The highway is already home to Leela Kempinski, Trident Hilton, Westin, Radisson, Crown Plaza, Galaxy, Best Western Resorts, Wet 'n' Wild Resorts and Heritage. More upcoming additions include Four Seasons, Piccadilly, Radisson and McDonald's Revolving Restaurant. "A total of 1,800 rooms in 3- to 5-star categories will come up in Gurgaon by 2012, most of them along NH-8. Currently, Gurgaon has 7,200 rooms (of hotels)," said Manbeer Chaudhary, president of Haryana Hotels and Restaurants Association.

The Oberoi opened its luxury hotel in Udyog Vihar on Tuesday, just off NH-8. Built over nine acre, its lobby is located on the fifth floor. The starting room tariff is Rs30,000.

Anumod Sharma, promoter of 5-star category Galaxy Hotel in Sector 15, off NH-8, said he would start another 200-room hotel at a nearby area along the highway. "The highway cutting across Gurgaon is connected with other metros, such as Jaipur and as far as Mumbai. Corporate people and general tourists who ply on this route will benefit a lot," said Sharma.
