Little did the Raikot police know how much embarrassment they would face when they called a press conference to announce the arrest of two young thieves on Friday.
One of the arrested “thieves”, a postgraduate student and IAS-aspirant started pointing out grammatical and spelling errors in the police press note and then proceeded to interrupt the concerned DSP, correcting his English during the media interaction.
Swaran Singh, 24, and his brother, Bhagwan Singh, were arrested by police on theft charges on Thursday night. He was however snubbed by the cops later and whisked away.
“It is a different story that we could not get jobs and had to take to stealing, beginning this year, but I was actually perturbed to see a gazetted officer using incorrect English,” Swaran, who is doing his Masters in Political Science told Hindustan Times. He had earlier created a scene telling the cops to make necessary corrections in spellings of various words like veterinary and curtains in the press note issued to mediapersons.
As soon as the arrested duo was brought before lensmen, Swaran started telling his side of the story in fluent English and answered most queries while citing chapters of the Constitution, which he reportedly studied while preparing for the IAS exams at a coaching academy.
A police party, which raided his house to seize stolen goods, too, underwent similar “grilling” as Swaran made the cops first complete all legal formalities before raiding his house. “He might be a thief but he is certainly aware of the rights granted by he Indian Constitution to a common citizen,” said a police officer.
