Nine navymen were killed and eight others were injured on Thursday, when their vehicle was blasted by a claymore mine, 18 kms from Medawachchiya on the road to Mannar in North West Sri Lanka.

Military sources said that the men were returning to duty after home leave.
Since the beginning of the New Year, 22 navy men, three army personnel, 28 civilians have been killed in Sri Lanka's troubled North East.
Thirteen of the navy men were killed in Trincomalee, and nine in Mannar.
