Panic prevailed among the rank and file in the RSS headquarters in Nagpur, when a senior RSS functionary was attacked by some unidentified miscreants on Monday night.
Mohan Agnihotri, general secretary of the Nagpur Mahanagar Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) was attacked by two unidentified persons at Nandanwan locality in south Nagpur when he was returning home after attending an RSS shakha.
Agnihotri was accosted by the miscreants as they blocked the RSS leader’s vehicle forcing him to stop midway to his home. The duo thereafter pulled down Agnihotri and slashed at him with knives. He sustained serious injuries. People from nearby areas came out and rushed him to a private nursing home where he was stated to be serious.
The motive behind the attack could not be known immediately, but police have registered an offence under section of 307 of the Indian Penal Code.
As the news spread like wildfire, hundreds of people rushed to the hospital and the RSS headquarters at Reshimbagh. The agitated RSS leaders also stormed the offices of all the four deputy police commissioners (DCPs) of Nagpur and expressed their anguish over the incident.
Later, a delegation, led by Dr Dilip Gupta, the chief of Nagpur Mahanagar RSS, met the commissioner of police (CP), Ankush Dhanvijay this evening and demanded that the culprits be arrested immediately. “It was not just an attack on an individual, but an attack on the RSS ideology,” he insisted and alleged that the RSS leader was attacked in a pre-planned manner.

{{/usCountry}}However, he did not name any one in this regard and said, “It is the job of the police to probe the matter and act accordingly.” The RSS also gave an ultimatum to the city police. Dr Gupta threatened that if the police failed to arrest the assailants within the next 48 hours, the RSS would launch a massive agitation against the police in Nagpur.
This is the first time that an RSS leader has been attacked in Nagpur. Dr Gupta ridiculed the city police for making a statement that personal enmity was involved in the incident.
