"I am not leaving till I find my mother," shrieked Ravita Devi, 32, when an official of Moti Lal Nehru Medical College on Monday tried stopping her from barging into the room where post-mortems of the stampede victims was being carried out.
Ravita's mother, Asha Devi, 50, got separated from the family during the chaos. The Kumbh pilgrimage has turned into a nightmare for the family from Bihar's Gaya district.
Ravita's mother is not among the dead at this hospital. Many others separated from their kin are suffering a similar trauma, looking at pictures of the dead. Not locating their beloved among the victims brings relief, raising hopes.
Gita Sharma, 55, of Jaunpur has visited all the hospitals in search of her two missing relatives - Bhanumati Sharma, 65, and Asharfa Sharma, 45. "Their names are neither among the dead nor the injured," she said at the MLN Medical College.
Doctors and staff at the city's hospitals are struggling to get their bearings back after being swamped by the flood of the dead and injured on Sunday.
Dr Shradha Dwivedi, superintendent-in-chief of Swaroop Rani Nehru Hospital, said, stocking medicines in advance in view of the Kumbh Mela had helped. MLN Medical College principal Dr SP Singh said the hospital would be on guard for the next Shahi Snan on February 15.
