Moderate Hurriyat Conference chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq asked has Kashmiri parties across the state and other side of the Line of Control to evolve a common minimum programme.

“We have to work out a new approach to the settlement of Kashmir, which looks receptively at all solution proposals,” Mirwaiz said at a seminar on Kashmir in London.

Umar underlined the fact that the dialogue on Kashmir was the only way out. He said Hurriyat was open to talks with New Delhi.
“ Stalled talks on Kashmir will get us nowhere. India and Pakistan have a responsibility not only towards Kashmiri people but also towards their own people,” Mirwaiz said. “Only an acceptable Kashmir settlement will guarantee peace in South Asia”.

Umar said Kashmir needed a solution that should satisfy the diverse people of the state. “Kashmir is not a homogeneous region as it is inhabited by people of different religions and ethnicities who have different aspirations and desires”

The Hurriyat chairman said it’s time that Kashmir is seen as a humanitarian problem rooted in the aspirations of Kashmiris themselves. “A hawkish outlook would get us nowhere,” he said.
