In an official press statement, the UPSC said it had come to notice that due to an error in the reckoning of vacancies reserved for SC and ST categories in respect of IPS, the vacancies reported by the concerned Ministry were interchanged for these two categories.

"The correct position of vacancies is 17 for SCs and eight for STs" and not vice-versa as displayed in the result declared on May 8, 2006, the statement said.

Consequently, the UPSC has revised the results of the Civil Services (main) examination, 2005. While there was a change in the merit order positions from 392 to 422, there was no change in the merit order list from rank one to 391 and from 423 to 425 in the results declared in May, the statement said, adding there was also no change in the total number of candidates recommended.
