THE STATEWIDE bandh call given by Shyam Behari Mishra’s UP Udyog Vyapar Prathinidhi Mandal evoked a mixed response in the city.

In a statement issued late in the evening Mishra claimed that the bandh had been a complete success throughout the State. Markets in Varanasi, Agra, Jhansi, Meerut, Moradabad, Bareilly, Aligarh and other cities of the State remained closed.
However, all wholesale markets remained closed in response to the bandh call.
However, the wholesale cloth market was an exception and it remained open.
Markets of Govind Nagar, Kidwai Nagar, Yashoda Nagar, Gumti, Swaroop Nagar and Sisamau, among others, remained partially open. The wholesale iron market was also partially open in defiance of the bandh call. No untoward incident was reported from anywhere in the city. However, the UP Udyog Vyapar Prathinidhi Mandal accused the administration of forcing traders to open their shops.
A procession of traders started from Latouche Road to hand over a memorandum of district administration. However, when the procession reached Moolganj, traders were informed that the City Magistrate would receive the memorandum at Moolganj crossing itself. However, they refused to hand it over to him and instead faxed it directly to Governor TV Rajeswar.
Shyam Behari also alleged that the State Government, along with three trade organisations associated with it, tried to ensure that the bandh failed.
