MNCs using ground water in excess: Soz

UNION MINISTER for Water Resources Saifuddin Soz on Moday said that the Centre had constituted an expert committee to look into alleged complaints that the multi-national soft drink companies were over-exploiting ground water resources. Soz said the expert committee would submit its report in next two months. The panel would also give its report on how these companies were making up or compensating for alleged over-exploitation of water resources.

Soz said the expert committee would submit its report in next two months. Soz made these disclosures in an informal chat with media persons today. The Union minister also held a meeting with Minister for Irrigation Dr Merajuddin Ahmad and senior officers of the State Government and demanded 300 cusecs of water for Delhi’s Sonia Vihar project. Besides demanding additional power for UP, Merajuddin also presented a Rs 885 crore restructuring plan for State canals. An additional plan of Rs 300 crore has been submitted for Sharda Sahayak canal.

Soz would also visit Rae Bareli to look into problems on irrigation front there and would also make an on the spot assessment of the Sharda Sahayak canal project.

Replying to a question, Soz said he hoped that the State Government would soon begin supplying 300 cusecs of water for Sonia Vihar project.
