A MOB went on the rampage and clashed with the police in Peepiganj town of the district on Sunday.
The incident took place after the arrest of a village pradhan who was leading a road blockade against police failure to arrest the accused in a murder case.
The mob damaged a jeep and beat up the Peepiganj police station incharge. Half-a-dozen police constables received injuries in the clash.
When police resorted to a lathicharge, the mob stepped up violence and snatched the service revolver of the station house officer.
Police personnel fled from the spot and villagers ransacked shops in the area.
This was the second incident of mob violence against the police in the last two days.
Trouble began around noon, when agitated villagers of Paniara blocked traffic on the Gorkahpur-Mahajganj national highway at Peepiganj crossing.
The villagers were protesting against the apathetic attitude of the local police towards registering a case and arresting the accused in the murder of the younger brother of a groom.
Peepiganj station house officer Lal Bachan Dhusia, along with seven constables, reached the spot and tried to persuade the villagers to lift the blockade. But, violence broke out after the arrest of the pradhan.
Following violence, policemen were deployed in the area. Markets were closed and the streets wore a deserted look, as people remained indoors, fearing further violence. Recently, a marriage party from Qazipur village, under Chiluatal police station, had gone to Narkatha village, under Paniara police station of Maharajganj district.

A goon Abhay Singh and his supporters chased the members of the marriage party, beat them and shot dead one Dinesh Yadav (18), younger brother of the groom Kamlesh Yadav, on Thursday.
