The magnitude-5.6 earthquake struck at 12:28 pm and was centered about 147 kms south of Jayapura, the capital of Papua province, it said.

The quake was felt strongly in Wamena in mountainous Jayawijaya district, located 78 kms west of the epicenter, said Simon Rumi, an official at the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency in Jayapura.

He said there was no immediate word on possible injuries or damage.

The quake also was felt in Jayapura and in Tanah Merah and Merauke on the southern coast of the island, he said. Jayapura is about 3,800 kms northeast of Jakarta and about 3,300 kms from Bantul, the area worst hit by a powerful earthquake on Saturday that killed more than 5,400 people.
