The quake, with a magnitude of 5.4, was centered 55 kilometers (35 miles) south of the capital, San Salvador, and happened at 7.43 pm local time (0143 GMT), the United States Geological Survey in Colorado reported.

Salvadoran officials gave the quake a magnitude of 6.2.
