A moderate intensity earthquake hit the Great Nicobar region in the Andaman and Nicobar archipelago early on Monday, Meteorological department said in Port Blair.

The quake of 5.6 magnitude on Richter scale had its epicentre off the south coast of Great Nicobar Island, it said.

The tremors were felt at 3.43 am, the weather department said.
Tremors have become a common feature in the region, which was devastated by tsunami waves triggered by a massive undersea earthquake off Sumatra Island on December 26.
