The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the quake's epicenter was about 950 kms south of Manila, near the town of Mati.

The US Geological Survey said the quake occurred at 12:53 local time and 123 kms beneath the earth's surface.

People living near the quake's epicenter said they felt the earth shaking and could see chairs wobbling and hanging objects swaying but that there were no reports of panic, local reporters said.

Quakes of this magnitude are relatively common in the Philippines, which sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire", but usually cause only minor damage.
