A moderate quake measuring 5.6 shook the New Britain region of Papua New Guinea earlyon Thursday,meteorologists said, but there were no immediate reports of casualties or damage.
The quake occurred at 5:08 am (0038 IST) with its epicentre 110 kms west of Kandrian at a depth of 67 kilometres, the US Geological Survey said.
The reading was based on the open-ended Moment Magnitude scale, now used by US seismologists, which measures the area of the fault that ruptured and the total energy released.
