A moderate earthquake measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale shook the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido on Tuesday, a day after a powerful tremor rocked the nation's south, officials said.
The earthquake occurred at 11.45 am with its epicentre located in the town of Tokachi some 900 kilometres north of Tokyo, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.
There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
The quake's focus was about 90 kilometres below the ground level.
There were no fears of a tsunami, the agency said.
Japan lies at the junction of four tectonic plates and has about 20 percent of the world's powerful earthquakes, frequently jolting Tokyo and other major cities.
On Monday, a 6.2-magnitude earthquake -- nearly as strong as last month's deadly tremor in Indonesia -- shook large areas of southwestern Japan, injuring at least six but not killing anyone.
