Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Thursday alleged that Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi had become arrogant and was behaving as if he had already become the prime minister.

In her 20 minute speech that specifically targeted the BJP while making no mention of the ruling SP or the BSP, Sonia also alleged that Modi was not appointing the lokayukta in his state to hide his and his government's corruption.

This came days after the BJP and Modi targeted her son-in-law Robert Vadra over alleged corruption in land deals.

Addressing an election rally in support of the party's sitting MP from Shrawasti, Vinay Pandey, Sonia sought to puncture the BJP and Narendra Modi's much-vaunted Gujarat model.

"What is the Gujarat model, do you know?" she asked the crowd. "There are a good number of villages in Gujarat that do not even have potable water. Gujarat has the highest malnutrition rate among children up to the age of five years. In Gujarat, people with a daily income of more than Rs 11 a day are not treated as poor."

She further alleged that the Modi government in Gujarat had given away 45000 acres of land for a song to a few favoured industrial houses.

Sonia said the Congress wanted to take the country ahead on the road of development within a strong democratic set-up where economic development was all-inclusive and power was not concentrated just in a few hands.

"The BJP is hungry for power. It wants to achieve power by destroying the country's secular fabric," she alleged. She said the BJP's divisive politics would harm the country.
