Arindam Sen Gupta, managing editor of The Times of India, passed away early on Thursday less than two months after he was diagnosed with lung cancer. He was 61.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi condoled his death, saying “he impacted many lives through journalism”.
“An accomplished editor who was widely admired, Arindam Sengupta impacted many lives through journalism. Pained by his demise. RIP,” Modi tweeted.
Sen Gupta joined the TOI group in 1991 as the coordinating editor of The Economic Times. He later moved to The Times of India in 2004 and became its executive editor in 2008. Remembered as a gentle human being and one of the most approachable editors in the industry, Sen Gupta never shied away from taking a stand on things that mattered to the man on the street.
Congress president Sonia Gandhi said the void left by Sen Gupta’s death would be hard to fill. Party vice president Rahul Gandhi tweeted that Indian journalism “has lost a much loved and admired voice”. CPI-M’s general secretary Sitaram Yechury called him “a gentleman-journalist” who mentored many young persons in the profession.
Finance Minister Arun Jaitley, who was also present at his funeral on Thursday afternoon, said, “Arindam Sengupta’s passing away is a great loss to journalism. A complete professional and a perfect gentleman.” Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal described Sengupta as “a great human being”.
