The American Institute of Indian Studies (AIIS) is trying to revive the glory of a bygone era with a photo exhibition of monuments built between the 14th and 17th centuries. 'Adventure, Trade and Travel' covers monuments in Punjab and Haryana.
At least 165 monuments of different categories like caravans sarai (rest houses), bridges, gardens and baolis (stepped wells) are featured. Some interesting places include the Nurmahal (a caravan sarai built in Jalandhar by Noorjahan), Sarai Amanat Khan (near Atari on the Indo-Pak border) and Shehre-Hisar-e-Feroza (Turquoise Fort), which was used by ruler Ferozshah Tughlak to protect Delhi in the 14th century.
The archive section of the exhibition is a history student's delight with over 5,000 photographs. Jawahar Sircar, secretary of the Ministry of Culture, inaugurated the exhibition. Jayant Prasad, special secretary, Ministry of External Affairs, appreciated the efforts of the archeological department of AIIS in documenting and displaying such an important era of our country.
"I really liked the detailed documentation of monuments," said Shikha Jain, convener, INTACH. Professor of art history at Jawaharlal Nehru University, Naman Ahuja, said his students often visit Gurgaon to go through the rich archives of monuments.
The exhibition is open till April 20 from Monday to Friday between 10am and 4pm at the AIIS, Sector 32, Gurgaon. Many students and scholars have already turned up to gatch a glimpse of the photographs that captured India's history.
