VILLAGES AND farmers will soon start getting power supply for 16 hours a day instead of 14 hours which they are getting now. The UP Power Corporation Ltd (UPPCL) is revising the rostering schedule and is likely to implement the new plan from September 1.
This becomes possible after the linking of the Northern power grid with the Eastern and the Western grids, recently. The linkage has improved the frequency of the Northern grid due to flow of more electricity into it and thereby making it possible for the UPPCL to draw more power from the grid without paying any penalty.
As per rules, no State is permitted to overdraw power from the grid when the grid frequency is low. “Now since the grid frequency continues to be higher, there is no problem in over-drawal,” said a senior officer.
Besides, the UPPC is also planning to place more power purchase orders for around 500 mw additional electricity to various power trading companies. The linkage of the grids through a 400 kv line between Tala, in Bhutan and Gorakhpur has provided an additional channel to UP to easily import more power from the Centre.
Earlier, it became difficult to purchase more power even when it was available due to lack of the lines to carry it. “But around 1500 mw power can easily be pumped into the Northern grid from the Eastern and the Western,” said the official.
