WITH THE sudden fall in temperature, the cold wave continues to sweep eastern Uttar Pradesh, including Varanasi, Ballia, Ghazipur, Chandauli, Mirzapur, Sonebhadra, Jaunpur, Azamgarh and other districts.

During the current winter season, over two-dozen persons have reportedly died of cold. Moreover, four fresh deaths were also reported in Varanasi.
Seventy-year-old Mithai Lal Patel died due to the cold in Rohania market, under Kashi Vidyapeeth development block, while 65-year-old Sahdev Rajbhar died in Govindpur village, under the same development block, on Friday.
Six-month-old Guria, resident of Jaitpura area and daughter of Mukhtar, also died due to the cold on Friday. She was admitted to a private hospital.
Similarly, 23-year-old Chanda, resident of Teliabagh, under Chetganj police station, died due to severe cold, at Shiv Prasad Gupta Divisional Hospital.
Besides, more than five-dozen patients were admitted to private and government hospitals, including Shiv Prasad Gupta Divisional Hospital, Deen Dayal Upadhyay Hospital and different community health centres.
The situation in the rural areas of Varanasi is the worst in the absence of bonfires at prominent places.
