The literacy rate among women may have increased from 74.7 per cent in 2001 to 80.8 per cent in 2011, but it is yet to reflect in their practical life. The participation of women in the family income continues to remain grim.
As per Census 2011 figures, working women constitute a mere 10.58 per cent of their population (78 lakh) while working men constitute 52.99 per cent of their population (89 lakh). The data was released on Tuesday by the Director of Census Operations, National Capital Territory of Delhi.
The data also reveals that 86.2 per cent Delhiites are literate and male literacy stands at 90.9 per cent.
Delhi's Census 2011 further divides the working population into two heads: main workforce (those who work for six months or more) and marginal workforce (those who work for less than six months). The marginal workers have been further sub-divided into those who work for 3-6 months and those who work for less than six months.
Of the total male marginal workers, those who work for 3-6 months comprise 83.7 per cent and those who work for less than three months were 16.25 per cent. On similar lines, women working for 3-6 months comprised 84.97 per cent of the total women work force while those who worked for less than three months stood at 15.03 per cent.
