Gone are the days of living alone, drinking and staying up all night watching late night movies on HBO. Though I cherish the days gone by, I was the one to put an end to it by calling my mother over and end my sorry state of affairs. (I was boiling bath water in an electric kettle as the gas had run out a month ago and I didn’t have a water-heater.) After six years of living alone (four of them wastefully spent on experimenting with hostel life when I had a decent alternative of staying with parents), my mother’s presence imparted a hygienic aura in the two-room flat.

Do I miss the good old days? In a way, yes, for I cannot come home late at night, can’t watch comedy serials (my mother watches tearful soaps at the time). Neither can I bring home my girlfriend. However, now I can grow my hair long, for my mother helps me taking care of it by oiling and regularly washing it. She has also renewed my hygienic sense, which seems to have been melting faster than Arctic ice caps during all these years.

On a related note, I have earned the awe of my colleagues (girls at office: “Oh, he is so caring”) for providing the “need to be present with my mother in the evening” as a reason for not coming to parties. Please don’t accuse me of harbouring a selfish streak as I love my mother like you all.

By the way, my father has started making threatening calls asking for my mother to come back. He has also threatened to take the car back in case I fail to comply. I am still in a fix as to how to handle this situation, which, with each passing day, seems to be worsening.

Perhaps, we will end up with an arrangement where my mother will have to share her time in both the houses. However, I’m not sure if this arrangement will work in case my sister starts missing her mother.
