Education plays a crucial role in the development of a nation and making the teachers accountable to the gram panchayat or community, improving connectivity and providing accommodation nearby would surely help improve the situation. I think teachers should also be paid on time, to keep them motivated.

This is with reference to ‘So what did you learn at school today?’ (August 5). Kudos for highlighting the problem of teacher absenteeism. After all, what hope do our less privileged children have if their own teachers play truant and do not take interest in their jobs? Education plays a crucial role in the development of a nation and making the teachers accountable to the gram panchayat or community, improving connectivity and providing accommodation nearby would surely help improve the situation. I think teachers should also be paid on time, to keep them motivated.

Make exams optional in school

Heartfelt congratulations for highlighting the failure of our country’s education system. In addition to teacher absenteeism, there is the problem that, in our system, passing an exam is all that matters. It is time to deliver results as per the changing needs of our society. I suggest that exams be made optional to make learning a pleasant experience for students. In addition, secondary school students should have the option of subjects like basic computer skills, basic accounting, banking etc. College students should have option like foreign languages, art appreciation, film production, public relations etc. This would offer some hope to students currently lost in the rat race — slow learners and children with learning disabilities. And it would reduce our student suicide rate, with the pressure cooker-like situation that is our current education system eased.
