The Krishnanagar police arrested five persons on Sunday, including three youths who were reportedly involved in getting a motorcycle financed against fake documents. This mobike was used in the shootout which three lives on June 16.

On the basis of the statement made by these three youths—-Subhash, Deepak and Munna—-the police declared that it was Mahendra Dikshit alias Chandan Pandit who had purchased the motorcycle under the fake name of Ramesh. The driving licence recovered from the motorcycle too carried Chandanan’s photograph.

The cops further came up with the theory that Chandan executed the killing with the help of slain gangster Ramesh Kaalia’s associate Mukesh.

The motive floated by the cops appeared feeble as the victim Suresh and his mentor Thakur Prasad Yadav had no rivalry. The cops claimed that Thakur Prasad and Suresh had enmity with land mafia Lallu Yadav. On the contrary, Thakur Prasad and Suresh had never confronted Lallu over any matter.

Lallu had orchestrated killings for railway contracts and land grabbing earlier but the cops failed to establish a convincing theory leading to land mafia’s involvement in the Krishnanagar shootout.

HT investigation revealed that Suresh stayed at various places in Krishnanagar since morning to late evening. He used to leave for his Hanskhera locality residence in Talkatora late on his motorcycle at night . Lallu Yadav lives in the same area and could have got Suresh eliminated easily any day. Though the police investigation, revealing that Mukesh and Chandan were frequent visitors to Lallu’s place, appeared true, it did not establish that the duo had executed the killing at the behest of land mafia.

However, in a desperate move to work out the case, the cops cooked up a feeble story and named the killers who were already absconding in other cases.
