The HRD ministry’s decision to teach Mandarin to Indian students is laudable (Speaking the right language, Our Take, September 18). This will turn the page of the Sino-India story to a new and friendlier chapter. It will also lead to the coming together of Asian nations, which will go a long way in breaking the West’s global dominance.

Time to judge the judges

The news of accusations of corruption against senior judges is shocking (Corruption glare on more CJIs, September 19). If there’s some truth to the charges levelled against certain chief justices, then the guilty should be severely punished. It’s important that people’s faith in the judiciary is restored and a system is evolved to ensure that the problem doesn’t recur.

In Omar Kashmiris do trust

The ongoing violence in the Valley is the handiwork of anti-national elements, who want to malign the reputation of the army and the government. It is wrong to state that people do not support Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. The people of J&K placed their faith in the National Conference in the 2008 elections. They could have either voted for the People’s Democratic Party or boycotted the elections. They did neither.

Correction

The caption of the picture with Harsh Mander’s article Hungry for action (September 21) wrongly stated Purnea as a part of West Bengal. It is a district in Bihar. We regret the error.
