The victim, a resident of Bhim Nagar in Bhind, was married to a youth in Gujarat but after two months of marriage, she separated from her husband and came back to her parents' house. Here, she met Rupendra Singh Rajawat, a police constable, and they started a live-in relationship.

Recently, Rajawat's kin fixed his marriage to a girl in Uttar Pradesh. When the victim came to know about it, she asked Rajawat to marry her but he refused to do so. So, the woman and her father, called on superintendent of police (SP) Vineet Khanna. The SP warned the constable that if he did not marry her, a rape case would be registered against him.

Initially, the constable gave his consent and the marriage was fixed. The wedding ceremony was supposed to be performed at Arya Samaj Mandir, Murar, Gwalior, on October 15. However, Rajawat, on the pretext of going out to bring his friends, fled from the 'mandap'.
