Mishra’s son Ashwani, brothers Ajay and Abhay, cousin Deepak Vajpayee and brother-in-law Yogesh Sharma face charges of murder, attempt to murder and rioting. “The police are busy maintaining law and order,” Gwalior Additional Superintendent of Police Manohar Verma said. “We did not get time to arrest the accused.”

An FIR was lodged on a complaint by Makhan Kushwaha, whose son Bhikam was killed.

Police said the accused — who wanted possession of two acres of land adjacent to the Institute of Professional Studies, owned by Anoop Mishra — went to Bela village to intimidate the villagers, who use the land as an approach road. The armed assailants told the villagers to clear out and when met with resistance, opened fire.
